Abstract
Significant performance and reliability improvements made in light emitting diode (LED) technology have enabled LED-based fittings to be used in place of traditional lighting solutions such as high pressure sodium and fluorescent sources. This paper by Igor Antin of specialist LED lighting manufacturer Dialight details the advantages and disadvantages of LED fittings against traditional fittings as well as other ‘long life’ lighting technologies. The paper also demonstrates how LED fittings may be used to improve safety and reliability in hazardous areas and extreme environments while improving the quality of light and reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) by reduced maintenance, spares and mandatory hazardous inspections.
Results
After years of purchasing and installing HID lamp sources, the lighting world has quickly acknowledged LED technology as a viable alternative. Although it has been integrated into multiple indication or signaling type applications over the last 50+ years, the technology has now improved significantly for high brightness white LEDs which allows for integration into illumination fixtures. This paper has detailed significant advantages in terms of safety, product integrity, quality of light and reliability with the adoption of LED technology. Compared to other lighting technologies, LED requires much less maintenance, creates less risk of fire, consumes less power, performs better, lasts longer, contains no mercury or hazardous material and generates a better quality of light.
Conclusions
The world’s largest companies have already realized the benefits and become more proactive in the rapid adoption of the technology. With future improvements in the white LED technology and the integration of advanced dimming and remote monitoring, intelligent lighting solutions will further enhance a facility, allowing for more control and predictability.
