This article consists of the classification of methods of cleaning the exterior surface of the pipe in four main criteria: • the degree of purification; • the nature of the mechanism of removal of the insulating coating; • the degree of mechanization of the cleaning process; • the external conditions of the work.In addition, the article includes an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages ofthe treatment, identifies common problems of mechanical methods of removing the insulation cover. At last offer of construction the new method of cleaning pipelines fromdefective insulation cover is propose.

Results
Because of mechanical methods of removing the insulation cover have a lot of shortcomings. It’s necessary to develope a methodology for calculating the mode of the machine for cleaning the outer insulation cover pipelines.
Сonclusions
The classification of insulation coatings removal methods can be used to classify thevarious mechanisms of removal and used to simplify the understanding of the nature of the process. Analysis of the mechanisms of removal showed that the existing methods do not meet all the requirements that apply tothem. Because of it as well as to the need for a methodology of calculation of operating modes of machines that implement oneor another way of removing the insulating coating.
